# Mercora by role

> Where operators, finance, admins and developers spend their time in Mercora, and what to read first.

Find your job below for the areas you'll use, the access you need and what to read first. Every member has one role, which sets what they can view and change; see [Roles and permissions](https://docs.mercora.io/concepts/roles-and-permissions.md).

## Operators

You get each document filed against the right trade, checked and approved. You'll spend most of your day in the **Inbox**, plus **Trades**, **Contracts** and **Shipments**.

**Access:** the built-in **Operator** role. Approving documents needs **Documents** at **Edit**.

**Read first:** [The Inbox](https://docs.mercora.io/documents/inbox.md), [Matching](https://docs.mercora.io/documents/matching.md), [Discrepancies](https://docs.mercora.io/documents/discrepancies.md), [Trades overview](https://docs.mercora.io/trades/overview.md).

## Finance

You keep invoices, payments and margins in line with what was billed and paid. You'll use **Financials**, **P\&L**, **Reports**, **Counterparties** and the **Financials** tab on each trade.

**Access:** **Financials** at **Edit** to record payments, **Reports** at **View** for the P\&L and reports. There's no built-in finance role: use **Operator**, or ask your admin for a custom role.

**Read first:** [Financials](https://docs.mercora.io/finance/financials.md), [Trade financials](https://docs.mercora.io/trades/financials.md), [P\&L](https://docs.mercora.io/finance/pnl.md), [Reports](https://docs.mercora.io/finance/reports.md).

## Workspace admins

You decide which parts of Mercora the team uses and who can see and change what: members, roles, modules, workspace settings, integrations and API keys, all under **Settings**.

**Access:** the **Admin** role, or any role with **Workspace admin** on.

**Read first:** [Members](https://docs.mercora.io/admin/members.md), [Roles and permissions](https://docs.mercora.io/concepts/roles-and-permissions.md), [Modules](https://docs.mercora.io/concepts/modules.md), [Integrations](https://docs.mercora.io/integrations/overview.md).

## Developers

You connect your firm's own systems to Mercora through its API, for hedging and automations. Whatever a call creates lands in the Inbox for a person to decide on.

**Access:** a workspace API key, created by an admin, not a member's role.

**Read first:** [API introduction](https://docs.mercora.io/api-reference/introduction.md), [API keys](https://docs.mercora.io/admin/api-keys.md), [Automations](https://docs.mercora.io/workflows/automations.md), [External systems](https://docs.mercora.io/integrations/external-systems.md).
